Case Study 1

Cowan Bay Rd

Located on a steep rural site with magnificent views across to Kawau Island, this house is also exposed to strong south and westerly winds. The design uses simple solid forms to create a sense of resilience to the wind on the south and west elevations whilst remaining open to the sun and views to the north and east.

The brief stated that the house must be open planned using simple forms and cost effective materials. The master bedroom is separated from the living space by a link consisting of sliding doors that provides a sunny afternoon outdoor space which can be protected from easterlies and all still accessible from the living/kitchen area.

Case Study 2

Attwood Rd, Paremoremo

A steep narrow site with tight planning restrictions and a natural watercourse created a challenging brief for this home.

Using the modern yet rustic appeal of ply and Onduline to compliment the surrounding pongas and native bush the house was designed to sit within the landscape without overpowering it.
Strategic planning allows extensive water views from both within the house and from protected courtyards.

The interior features large open plan spaces with sliding partitions that connect seamlessly with exterior spaces.

As an Auckland architect we were able to meet our client's needs.

Case Study 3

Westbourne Rd, Murrays Bay

The intent of this house was to create a style with a Balinese feel and combines plaster and vertical timber with large eaves that invoke a peaceful, tropical ambience opening onto decks and a lap pool surrounded by existing lush planting. Carefully designed windows, copper exterior fittings and details complete this timeless style.

With site restrictions due to a watercourse and to maintain existing sub tropical vegetation for ambience, the house is located to the rear of the site with a covered walkway that passes over water and amongst tropical planting. The walkway connects the house with the street and a triple garage incorporating a self contained unit above for the nanny.

Scotts Landing, Mahurangi Harbour

Designed to take advantage of an amazing waterfront site with panoramic Mahurangi harbour views, this home is designed with walls that virtually disappear. The layout is broken into 3 modules with glazed links that provide protected courtyards from westerly winds. These can be opened completely to connect to the front deck area.

Terraced decks and retaining walls allow the amount of visible pool fencing and balustrading to be reduced. Curved copper roofs, natural concrete tiltslab construction and timber create a self weathering cladding system designed to blend within the site. Curved roofs juxtaposed with strong vertical and horizontal line provide a dynamic yet understated appearance.. Varying heights and roofs create an intimate scale to a large structure.

Asbury Crescent

The entire upper floor of this 70's house was redesigned to incorporate a master bedroom, study and ensuite over a new double garage. The kitchen and living areas were reworked to create better flow to deck and views. The existing roof line was retained and extended and the sarking and exposed roof structure look was continued .The entire house is reclad in a mix of plaster and weatherboard to replace existing Hardiplanks. The stairwell becomes a visual vertical feature of the exterior. Roof lines were carefully designed to reduce council planning restrictions.
